What would be the cause of 4 USB ports failing?

Out of the 8 USB ports on my PC;  4 (2 front and 2 back) have stopped working completely or not properly as in when something like a mouse or keyboard is plugged in the connection flickers.

What would cause this? Is there a simple fix?

Lambourne, I would start by unplugging all unused USB devices from the working ports, and see if the problem ports stabilize.

Double check your device manager, try to figure out which specific USB ports those are, right-click and uninstall the problem ports, reboot, then go back into device manager and 'scan for hardware changes' so it re-adds the ports (if it didn't already).

If they were only in the front, I'd say check your cabling, but since they are front and back... it must be software related. Something is interfering with your USB drivers.
