During World War II, Finnish Captain Lauri Allan Törni's unit inflicted such heavy casualties on Russian units that the Soviet Army placed a bounty on his head of 3,000,000 Finnish marks.
Törni, an officer in the German Army (2nd class Iron Cross), surrendered to Allied troops in the last stages of World War II and returned to Finland in June 1945 after escaping from British POW camp in Lübeck, Germany.
In 1949, travelled under a Swedish alias to Venezuela and jumped overboard off the coast of Alabama.
In 1953, was supported by the law firm of "Wild Bill" Donovan, former head of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).
JAN 1954 - Enlisted in the U.S. Army
NOV 1955 - Sergeant in the U.S. Army
JAN 1957 - Commissioned First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps
From 1958 to 1962, he served in the 10th Special Forces Group in West Germany in Bad Tölz.
In 1962, part of a search and recovery mission in the Zagros mountains of Iran to recover the crew remains of an American transport and some classified equipment.
In 1963, served in the 7th Special Forces Group in Vietnam.
In 1964, served in the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam.
From 1964 to 1965, served in the MACV Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) in Vietnam.
In OCT 1965, in a helicopter crash in Vietnam while supervising a clandestine mission.
From 1965 until 1999, POW/MIA in Vietnam.
In 1999, Finnish and Joint Task Force-Full Accounting team repatriated his remains to the United States.
On 26 June 2003, buried in Arlington National Cemetery, section 60, tombstone 8136.
