Now that the people of the United Kingdom have voted, I wonder if the UK will be forced back into the UNION at gunpoint. Perhaps, they will be invaded and occupied in a similar way as the sovereign southern states were in the 1800s.

The decision by sovereign states and its people to secede from the Union had to do with rhetoric of the incoming president and the societal trends.

Slavery was around for thousands of years. Middle Eastern and North African markets were the big consumers of slaves.

The ancient Greeks and Romans were slave owners. The Norwegian Vikings raided Ireland and sold humans to the Muslims in Spain. The Swedish Vikings raided Russia and sold humans to the Muslims in southwest Asia.

The Spanish conquest of the Caribbean did not have enough Indians to work the haciendas and the new Spanish arrivals insisted on more slaves. Expeditions to Mexico and Central America were funded to acquire more slaves.

Slaves who found their way to North America were sold by Africans to Shipping companies owned and operated by Northern businesses primarily out of Massachusetts.

The Southern economy was dependent on its labor force. Real American families were facing serious economic hardship and security issues at the prospect of changing their society. The freeing of slaves was an after-thought of Union leadership in an attempt to further degrade an opponent.

Wow. That may be the worst excuse for treating human beings like property, I've ever heard.

Reality is a bitch. Life is a struggle. Mankind's sorted past and continuous violent existence is unfortunate.

Pretending the U.S. Civil War was about Slavery is a concern. Making decisions that cost the lives of approximately 750,000 Americans is inexcusable.

Some of this could come as a shock because we were led to believe that Lincoln was a saint.

I agree that waking up one morning to find out that the white males of the Deep South did not invent slavery must be disturbing.

Not as disturbing as your distorted version of U.S. History.

Who invented the institution of slavery is not in question here. The question was: do we allow it to expand to the new states. The south could see where the trend was heading and in an effort to preserve the institution of slavery decided to secede. The inexcusable decision Lincoln made was the only one left if the Union was to be preserved.
Unless you would rather be living in the CSA?

The expansion of slavery was at the center of the national debate.

The following article may be hard for you to read but in my case, it helps explain this bizarre debate we've been having.

Approxmately 750,000 American fathers, brothers, and sons were killed.

How many family members are you willing to sacrifice to feed starving Somalis, nation build in Iraq, or afford women's rights in Afghanistan?
