Announcement was in JUN 2015
Tripwire Interactive and Anti-Matter Games revealed that Rising Storm 2: Vietnam, the sequel to 2013's critically acclaimed Rising Storm on PC. "We're bringing our gritty and realistic military shooter gameplay forward to a time when assault rifles ruled the ground, choppers ruled the skies, and every tunnel could hide an ambush," said Tripwire Interactive President, John Gibson, "The iconic setting of Vietnam opens up so many opportunities for exciting asymmetrical gameplay."

JAN 2016
Building off our experience with the first Rising Storm (winner of PC Gamer’s “Game of the Year” award in 2013), Vietnam will feature the asymmetrical combat between the United States Army and Marine Corps, fighting the North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong irregulars. This will be the franchise's first step into the modern era, where the competing forces are (mostly) armed with automatic weaponry, as well as having even more supporting firepower available, in terms of artillery and air support.

The first two of the central pillars of gameplay to look at are Squads and Firefights. There have been many discussions on the forums on these two topics, but here are some thoughts from us:

The new squad system is currently being built with an emphasis toward playing with your friends, ease of cooperation/working with the rest of the squad and squad communications. This squad system should provide more “friend” functionality, while removing some of the complexity of the old system.

In general, we are aiming to promote more defined firefights between players, enhancing and updating some of the core shooting mechanics. Not going to help if you let someone sneak up behind you, or ambush you from 10 feet away - or you let Mr Snipey take a carefully worked shot at your head. But for face-to-face engagements at normal combat ranges, a little more thought, practice and skill may be needed. Easy to use and understand, a need for calm under fire, but still deadly.

The game is being built on top of an enhanced version of the RO2/RS (UE3) platform. As part of this we are also working to enhance our community SDK by looking to clear modding roadblocks that were encountered on our previous titles.

This looks good.

I really enjoyed RO2/RS. It took a while to get into but was worth the effort.

As well as game of the year, is was also voted best online shooter!

We've played this together a few times with Scriv and Taz. So far it's been good fun for the most part.

The main game mode in Rising Storm 2: Vietnam is Territories, where the attackers try to capture and hold one or two objectives at the same time in order to advance for the next set of objectives. It's a lot like a mix of Rush and Conquest from the Battlefield series. 32 players on each side for a total of 64 players on the server.

Most of the time the attackers are USA, but sometimes they can be Australian Army or Vietcong. The defending side is usually Vietcong. What side you are on decides what weapons you can have and how do squad spawns happen. The US soldiers can spawn directly on their squad leader, and the Vietkong squad leader can place a squad tunnel to be used by any squad member. The basic grunt gets an M16/AK-47 and a few grenades. Special classes get flamethrowers, sniper rifles, RPGs etc. The weapons are deadly and accurate. Using full auto is only good for extremely close quarters.

Other gameplay mechanics include the ability to rest your weapon on a surface, which happens automatically once you're close enough. Another way of improving accuracy is to use a bipod or going prone. There is a suppression effect, so even hitting close to an enemy has some effect by letting other squad members to advance. With most weapons you can adjust the scope for the range. This is more of a concern for sniper rifles and generally very long range engagements.

The only vehicles at the moment are helicopters, and only the US side gets them. There's a recon chopper, a transport chopper and an attack chopper. I think an APC is coming in the future. The maps are big and often have dense forests to hide in.

What are you waiting for? Get back on the battlefield! At the momement you can get RS2: Vietnam for 10$ on Humble Bundle. You'll also get the modern day shooter Insurgency and the WWII shooter Day of Infamy (both from the same developer) as well as some other games.

New update. New faction, new weapons (like the M1 Garand, M1918A1 BAR ), new maps, new fixes and changes. Leaning has been updated (for better or for worse, I don't know yet), the amount of bandages has been reduced from 2 to 1. Movement around rocks and cliffs should be smoother.
