WHEEL?! When did you get a wheel and what model?

Despite its immense amount of power, the LaFerrari is easy to handle thanks to all the electronics. But if you're having trouble, there's one thing that usually helps: don't give it too much throttle in the corners. Just blast through the straights and note your speed. The LaFerrari comes with great brakes, but when you're going 300 km/h, you'll need to brake pretty early no matter what. And even if it is Ferrari's hypercar, you can't corner like a Formula 1.

When driving an unfamiliar car you could try driving at a moderate speed at first and then raise it when you're comfortable.

I had to test the Monte Carlo track right away! The first thing I learned was that the RUF isn't the right car for this track...yet. Someone has already driven on this combination and posted a video about it. It'll be a while before I can control the RUF in the snow as well as he does. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZqd2yAn4r8

A car with front-wheel drive and a small amount of power was what I needed. The Rover Mini Cooper seemed like a good choice, and it was. It doesn't have much power, but it's a classic rally car. After a while of getting used to the car and the slippery track I was Scandinavian flicking my way through most of the corners.

I also tried the Alpha Romeo QV and the BMW M3 E30. The Alpha Romeo is just boring to drive. The BMW of course has rear-wheel drive. RWD doesn't fit rallying very well, but luckily we'll get AWD cars in the future as official cars and most probably in mods too.

Alright, my choice would be LaFerrari on Spa. The LaFerrari has phenomenal acceleration, but can we beat the 458 GT2's lap times with it? Sounds like a cool combination to me.

I could've sworn we've had a P4/5 challenge before, but I guess not. I haven't used it much for some reason. It's a race car, so it should be good. However, if we'd like to try a car with insane acceleration and top speed, there's always the Ferrari LaFerrari.

I wish I had enough time for the RUF challenge... There was only enough spare time for a few laps for both portions of the challenge. But it was a tremendous amount of fun with my new favorite car!

Wobbly is absolutely correct. As has been shown over and over again, you don't need a steering wheel to get good lap times. Wobbly is constantly in the lead with his gamepad. But now Vrindu is has shown a new level of driving ability with his steering wheel setup.

Having a steering wheel and pedals (and a gear shifter...) greatly enhances the experience. You know how playing an FPS or the latest NHL game feels nothing like the real thing? Playing with a steering wheel in the cockpit view gets you very close to the real feeling of driving. Of course you won't feel the G-forces but you do control the car just like you would in real life. Just turn off all driving aids, especially automatic gearbox, and you won't regret spending so much money on a wheel as you're having so much fun. :P

Different games have a different kind of a feel to them. Assetto Corsa is a very realistic simulator where driving is intuitive. Something like Need for Speed Shift is fun to drive, but not very realistic, which made it less fun for me. Even different sims have a different driving feel. You'll just have to see what suits you.

(taken straight from the periodic challenge thread)

I've probably recommended some wheels numerous times, but I'll do it again.
I'm using the Logitech G27, which is one of the best wheels around. Three great pedals, a six-speed gear shifter, 900° turning force feedback steering wheel with flappy paddles behind it for gear shifting... But the thing is, it's usually about 300€. Right now one can be bought for about 250$. With well over a hundred hours in various racing games, I can say it has been worth it. Englishman bonus: you can attach the gear shifter on the left side of the wheel just as well! And nothing forces it to be attached on the same level as the wheel, so it's possible to put it on the hip level like in a real car.

Another one I can recommend is the Logitech Driving Force GT. The wheel turns 900° and has great force feedback effects. However, the pedals (throttle and brake, clutch is missing) aren't very good. It has a sequential (up/down) gear shifter. The prices are usually about 100$-150$. Right now you can get one for 120$.

If your monetary situation allows it, Vrindu has set up and example for the best setup available: a Thrustmaster T500 steering wheel+pedals, a cup seat and an H-pattern gear shifter (not sure if he had one yet). They should be of a high quality, but they are very pricey. I almost considered selling my G27 and getting a T500 for about 400 € (100 € more than the G27), but then I noticed the gear shifter is sold separately for over a hundred euros. Gulp.

The main thing to check when buying your first wheel is that is has force feedback and a general rule of thumb is that a wheel costing less than 100 € won't be fun to use. The cheap wheels don't have any feel to them so driving is difficult. Having a clutch pedal and an H-pattern gear shifter isn't mandatory, but makes driving much more fun.

The Logitech G25 should be very much like the newer G27, except it's slightly noisier, you can switch the gear shifter between H-pattern and sequential styles, the wheel only has two buttons instead of six and the pedals cannot be adjusted. Overall an excellent choice, and one can be bought for only 150 $ in Amazon! If you're looking for a good price-quality ratio, this one can't be beaten, provided the wheel is in good condition like the sellers say.

Oh crap, I was in third place all along!

It's great to see increased interest in the game and our own little challenge. Even if it means falling down from the podium...

Oh yeah, and Wobbly and Viper should do it too! Seriously, having a steering wheel makes driving much more immersive and fun.

You're right about the weak brakes. I don't think there's a problem with steering, vice versa. I think the CTR has the best handling in the game. You need to help it steer better by using oversteering to your advantage. I have no idea if this is more difficult with a gamepad, but for me driving all these difficult cars has become a second nature.

The Yellowbird is often compared to the Ferrari F40, which has a similiar amount of power. I think the F40 is more eager to kill you in the twists and turns, and when it starts spinning, it's very difficult to recover. Not with the Yellowbird. Or maybe it's just that I've played Assetto Corsa for well over a hundred hours now. There's only one way to know for sure: driving and comparing both the F40 and the CTR for several hours!
