I have thought about this a lot. I do agree that light speed is not the end all as scientists say.
But, let me throw another idea at you.
Scientists also used to think that the Earth was at the center of the solar system. It was then discovered that it was the Sun.
So, what if we are not at the center of the universe? Just another system, most likely already traveling much faster than light speed, with other systems around us doing the same thing. Just at slightly different speeds to make it seem like we are at the center.
E.g., looking twards the center we would see systems moving away from us, but the reality is, we are moving away from them as they move away from the center. In an ever expanding universe it is possible and I am not sure if we even have instruments capable of testing it.
